Welcome to the online catalogues of the collections of Sir John Soane's Museum.

The museum is committed to making its collections available to the public by cataloguing them. Over the last few years this has been in the form of printed books. Lynda Fairburn's Italian Renaissance Drawings was published in 1998; Jill Lever's Drawings of George Dance appeared in 2004, the same year that the Concise Catalogue of Drawings was put online on the Soane website. The year before Helen Dorey and Michael Peover's catalogue of the stained glass in the museum saw publication as the 2003 Journal of the British Society of Master Glass Painters.

In future we will be concentrating our efforts on publishing the catalogues of our collections online, here on our web site, to make the collections available freely and as widely as possible. We will take full advantage of the opportunities that online publishing can offer. Catalogue entries will be accompanied whenever possible by a digital image of the drawings or object. They will also be updated to take account of new discoveries and publications.

Catalogue entries will be published in tranches, as they are prepared. Already the first of the library catalogue entries are here on the website along with the first part of the catalogue of Baroque Drawings. They will shortly be joined by early Soane drawings, the Grand Tour drawings of Robert and James Adam, and the catalogue of Classical Antiquities.

This change to online cataloguing is a bold step for the Museum, but I think a timely, necessary - and - exciting one.
